Winter Swans

"... The clouds had given their all -
two days of rain and then a break
in which we walked,

the waterlogged earth
gulping for breath at our feet
as we skirted the lake, silent and apart,

until the swans came and stopped us
with a show of tipping in unison.
As if rolling weights down their bodies to their heads

they halved themselves in the dark water,
icebergs of white feather, paused before returning again
like boats righting in rough weather.

'They mate for life' you said as they left,
porcelain over the stilling water. I didn't reply
but as we moved on through the afternoon light,

slow-stepping in the lake's shingle and sand,
I noticed our hands, that had, somehow,
swum the distance between us

and folded, one over the other,
like a pair of wings settling after flight ..."

I wrote an essay on this poem today in an english literature exam. Thank you for making it so interesting. It gave me lots to write about it! It was nice to be able to discuss a poem I actually like and understand.

I did it today too :)
I understood it, about a couple who've been arguing kinda thing, but then the swans made them think kind of? And brought them back together?
But i came out of the exam and al my friends were saying they thought it was about talking swans and winter weather! :S
I was like wtf? LOL!
I think i did okay on it though :)

Of all the things that they could have picked this was a lush poem and really easy to write about :)
soooo happy!!!!!!
anyone else start babbling about how the iceberg could be metaphorical because of the titanic etc?

Hehe, so I'm guessing you guys sat the higher too, just as I did.
As others did I almost cried too! Its such a gorgeous poem and now I really understand it. I was talking to my boyfriend who also sat the higher and I just needed to read it again.
I didn't get that the couple had been arguing but, now that it has been commented on, it does make sense. Damn! I didn't put that in!
Well done everyone! I'm sure you all did really well.
Hopefully I come out with a B at least and to all those studying Lit for A-levels too hope you geet a B and above too.
Lots of love,
x Robin! x

Sorry to go off the subject, but did anyone else think the Romeo and Juliet questions in that exam were really hard? :L

As with most people here I had to write an essay on this poem for my English Literature exam today. I must say I nearly shed a tear after I first read it, it was full of so much emotion and brought back so many memories of me and a person very close to my heart. I actually found it hard to write about it for a while because of this!
My favourite poem at the moment and probably will be for a long time too!

it was amazing to get a poem like this, that may not have been, but WAS so easy to interpret. my friends started telling me that they just thought it was a couple walking around a lake in thw winter time, but i suggested the thought of lovers? and that the swans had become a distraction from whatever was making them feel cold towards eachother,

i had this poem aswell yesterday in my lit exam. it's sooo simple yet beautiful. im glad it was something so enchanting and interesting to read

Couldn't agree more this poem is absolutely fab! I love it! By the way girls have you googled Owen Sheers? He's lush! Almost as gorgeous as the poem... :)

Same as the other people who have commented, I too had this poem for my English Lit paper yesterday and was so glad to find one that I not only understood but also liked. Though I did just as 'Emily' did and wrote as though it had been a couple arguing. 'two days of rain' shown as somthing of a storm between the couple etc. Anyway, fab poem and thanks very much! Love Jayne X

officially my favourite poem. i had to write about it for my english lit exam and wrote like 3 pages...
i absolutely lovedd it
it was beautiful (:

yes our exam had missing mice and men question. we had to wait for a while before we could start! damn! but yes the poem was immense! i said something like i thought the use of the swan as an iceberg was a metaphor of the couple hiding a part of themselves. erm i think i commented on the use of personification as a great way to show the poet's feelings as it is a tecknique used to show something without giving it an obvious meaning. which related to the couples love which is obviously starined due to a secret maybe? ;)
love this poem. my mate thought it was about a storm and death. aha z

ok, it may be a fairly decent poem, and it may be good to do on the exam, but thers no need to cry about it....

last week, 19th May, I Had to write an essay of sorts on this poem.

I completely fell in love with it, and was shocked and elated to Find who the author was; one of my favourite poets.
although I hadn't read ‘Winter Swans’ before, its a wonderful poem, and it was a sheer delight to write about it .

I had this for my Lit - absolutely beautiful. I bet ol' Owen is darn proud his came up for an exam >.<
There was so much imagery and hidden meanings that I could work with...
trouble was - getting it all written down before the end of the exam...

I had an English Mock exam today, and this was the 'unseen poem', and it's absolutely beautiful. The more I read, the more I discover and the more I can untangle out of it's emotional knots. Initially, and in the exam, I didn't notice the idea that this couple had been through a turmoil and these swans reminded them of their love together. Instead, I focused on the language Sheers used, and his use of swans to represent the beautiful nature of love and the earth. I particularly loved:

'the waterlogged earth
gulping for breath '

I felt this gave life to the earth, and I felt a sense of being, as if the earth was an entity in sync with the two people and the swans.
English happens to be my worst subject and I am scientifically and mathematically minded, but this poem has made me fall in love with poetry and words as I once was a few years back. Thank you Owen Sheers, such a talented and beautifully minded man who really made my English Literature Exam an enjoyable one, rather than an utterly boring drag.
